Indigenous Australian claiming posession of England

TIL that on January 26 1988*, an indigenous Australian, Burnum Burnum, planted the indigenous Australian flag :flag_aboriginal_australian: on the beaches under the white cliffs of Dover, claiming possession of England on behalf of Indigenous Australians.

He made what is known as the Burnum Burnum Declaration, which included:

*In claiming this colonial outpost, we wish no harm to you natives, but assure you that we are here to bring you good manners, refinement and an opportunity to make a Koopartoo – “a fresh start.”

*Henceforth, an Aboriginal face shall appear on your coins and stamps to signify our sovereignty over this domain.

*Based on our 50,000 year heritage, we acknowledge the need to preserve the Caucasian race as of interest to antiquity, although we may be inclined to conduct experiments by measuring the size of your skulls for levels of intelligence. We pledge not to sterilize your women, not to separate your children from their families.

you don't hate losing your job, you hate poor social security

wonder if we've been describing the fediverse poorly this whole time

like, we personally usually lead with "it's like Twitter except"

maybe we should be leading "it's like old web forums and BBSes except"

like, those web forums were often run by somebody-or-other for their own community on their own expense with variously outdated software and community cultures that ranged from healthy to very not - and those cultures tended to stay healthy with good moderation and not without

Slow progress 😅, can't be helped, weather doesn't cooperate. 🥵

A least is taking form 🙃

:boost_ok: SFF politics

Where are the contemporary #SFF authors who support anti-oppressive revolution?

To be clear, we don't mean authors whose books can be interpreted as (or explicitly are meant to be) advocating for the overthrow of a fucked up society. Someone can write a book like that while not supporting such things in the "real world".

We mean authors whose own politics put them opposed to elected liberal progressives as much as elected conservatives & the far-right; authors who openly identify with anarchism, communism, or other varieties of anti-capitalism; authors who consider the world's most powerful nations to be entirely illegitimate; authors who feel hopeful when oppressed people *tear down* the world's ruling institutions rather than become members of them. We mean authors who actually say they believe these kinds of things in public & don't retract them.

Where are they?

It's not too hard for us to think of writers like this throughout history, especially 20th century authors, but where are the ones who are *currently* releasing new #SciFi, #Fantasy, & #SpecFic (regardless of whether their writing is explicitly about all that stuff)? That's what we would like to know.

Mr. Mastodon and the open letter

Lol, didn’t know about the #Mastodon sponsorship hypocrisy. 🤣

https://seedy.xyz/posts/0005-open-letter/#sponsorships

I don’t think Eugen will ever resign, why would he? He is the dictator over a well-known brand and hundreds of thousands of people and he gets paid for it. Open letters won’t harm his position. We are constantly posting about all the issues in the letter for years, telling people to move off the “official” instances for years. It didn’t really work.

If you want to kick him off the Fediverse, you’ll have to take more drastic measures. Measures that are not justifiable in my opinion.

Build a better network without dictators and with paid developers, moderators, and so on. There are a lot of people on here who have the money to pay 3 or more streaming service subscriptions. It should be no problem to finance a social network.

aral balkan, mastocop

lmao @ aral saying "I’m not sure why you want to assume the worst of [Girugamesh]." dude really telling on himself

Yay! I released again a new version of #nani, a #japanese dictionary app. The new version should be available on #fdroid soon.

It allows you to download the dictionaries you are interested in (language, features, source, …) and use them offline to search for anything.

This new version provides improvement in the UI (dark theme, fixes to furigana text, moved the search bar to the app bar) and a new tab for kanji search powered by kanjidic.

uspol, physical harm

Whoever is blasting US foreign service workers with undetectable waves and taking them out of commission deserves a friggin Nobel Prize. Who knows what else those deep state folks could've done if their careers had progressed; dozens of potential generals and Congresspeople and state department officials have been removed from the promotion pipeline. All without killing them!

Bringing slow cargo back to the Hudson

To some, reviving sail freight might seem like a futile endeavor. For Merrett, the question is: why not grow a river-based economy that runs alongside a land-based counterpart? After all, the infrastructure already exists.
